Vannes (English spelling)

The capital of the Morbihan department in western France. Population 51,759 (1999). Located 450 km southwest of Paris, it is a port city facing the Gulf of Morbihan, an inner bay of Quiberon Bay in the southern part of the Brittany Peninsula. Oyster farming and wire manufacturing are thriving in the city. It is the seat of a bishopric and also has a military academy. Before coming under Roman rule, it was the center of the Celtic Venetians. In 845, the Briton Nominoe gained Brittany's independence from Charles II of the West Frankish Kingdom, and it became part of the Duchy of Brittany. In 1532, Brittany was annexed to France, and the declaration of annexation was made here. The old town is surrounded by medieval walls (completed in the 13th century) and has many historical buildings, including the Saint-Pierre Cathedral (13th century), making it a tourist city.

フランス西部、モルビアン県の県都。人口5万1759（1999）。パリの西南西450キロメートルにあり、ブルターニュ半島南部、キブロン湾の内湾モルビアン湾に面する港町。カキ養殖や針金製造が盛ん。司教座の所在地で、士官学校などもある。ローマの支配を受ける以前はケルト系ベネティ人の中心地であった。845年ブリトン人のノミノエが西フランク王国のシャルル2世からブルターニュの独立的地位を獲得したのち、ブルターニュ公国の一部となった。1532年ブルターニュがフランスに併合されたが、その宣言は当地で行われた。旧市街は中世の城壁（13世紀完成）に囲まれ、サン・ピエール寺院（13世紀）をはじめ歴史的建造物も多く、観光都市ともなっている。
