It is found in Euphorbiaceae and other plants, bone oil, and wood distillate, and is also produced together with ammonia when animal and vegetable matter decays. It is produced by heating methanol or formaldehyde with ammonium chloride. It is a colorless, flammable gas with an odor similar to ammonia. Melting point -92.5 °C, boiling point -6.7 °C. 0.699. It is a stronger base than ammonia, with a p K a of 10.68 (25 °C). It is used in synthetic chemistry for tanning leather and for various other purposes. It irritates the skin and mucous membranes and causes chemical burns. The hydrochloride salt is a hygroscopic plate-like crystal with a melting point of 232-234 °C.
