Sappa (Japanese shad) - Sappa (English spelling)
A marine fish of the Clupeidae family (illustration). It is called Harakata in Kansai and Kochi, and Hadara in Kumamoto. It is found in various places south of Hokkaido, and inhabits inland bays, forming schools near river mouths. It is actively caught using lure hooks on embankments. It is caught in large numbers in small fixed nets, but has low market value and is treated as a small fish. The body is significantly laterally compressed, with a bluish-black back and a silvery-white abdomen. It has no lateral line, and its scales are harder to peel off than those of other Clupeidae fish. The edge of the abdomen is jagged with ridged scales. Throughout the egg, larvae, and juvenile stages, it is easily mistaken for the Konoshiro gizzard shad, as both its morphology and ecology are similar, but the adult fish has a clearly different body color and dorsal fin shape.
