Poet, critic, journalist, and cultural historian. His real name was Wataru Ichihashi. He was born in Nagoya City. He dropped out of Nagoya Municipal Commercial School and studied English at night school. In September 1928 (Showa 3), he launched the publication of "Poetry and Poetics." He played a leading role in the historical formation of modernist literature with works such as "Modern Art and Criticism Series," a 23-volume series (April 1929 - July 1932), "New Movement in Nijisseiki Eibungaku" (1933), and "Literary Criticism" (1934). He attempted formalist poetic experiments in "Shokubutsu no Danm (Cross Section of a Plant)" (1929), and introduced Western poetic thinking and methodology in "Shi no Kenkyu (Study of Poetry)" (1931) and "Atarashiki Shiron (New Poetics)" (1940). His editorial philosophy, which always provides insight into the fate of beauty and thought in contemporary culture at a globally synchronous level, is highly regarded in works such as "Serpent," "Poetics," "New Territories," and "Rooster Correspondence." After World War II, he published works such as "Cultural History of Flowers," "Cultural History of Beer," "Cultural History of Fashion," "Guide to Western Trivia," and "Expositions Internationale" as a practical example of his unique cultural philosophy. He also translated "Ideological Conflicts in Contemporary French Literature" (originally written by R. Michot, 1937).
