Japanese: 不妊防除 - ふにんぼうじょ

A method of pest control in which either or both male and female pests are rendered sterile by some means, then released into the wild to reduce the rate of mating and fertilization between normal males and females, thereby reducing the insect population. In other words, if several times the total number of sterile insects are released against the pests in an isolated area, the occurrence of mating and fertilization between normal males and females is significantly reduced by the presence of the sterile insects. By repeating this process, it is possible to eradicate a particular pest in the same area. Calculations have shown that the rate at which pest populations are reduced by this method is much faster than by using insecticides, etc.

害虫の雌雄の両者あるいは一方をなんらかの手段で不妊とし，それらを野外に放し，正常な雌雄間の交尾，受精率を減少させることによって，昆虫の個体数を減少させる害虫防除法をいう。すなわち，ある孤立した地域の害虫に対し，その総数の数倍の不妊昆虫を放飼すると，正常な雌雄による交尾，受精の確立は，不妊昆虫の混在によって著しく減少する。これをくり返すことによって，同地域の特定の害虫を絶滅させることができる。このような方法による害虫の個体数の減少速度は，殺虫剤などによる場合よりもずっと速いことが計算によって示されている。
