1700‐72 Born in the Netherlands, he was the founder of the Old Viennese School of Medicine. He studied philosophy at the University of Leuven and medicine at Leiden University. He was a lecturer at Leiden University, but in 1748 he was invited to serve as personal physician to the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa, and was appointed dean of the medical school at the University of Vienna. He placed the university under state control and carried out major reforms, including the establishment of an anatomical lecture hall, a chemical laboratory, and a botanical garden. His book, Commentary on the Aphorisms of Boerhaave, was translated into Japanese in 1826 by Tsuboi Nobumichi under the title Manbyō Chijun.
