...A new form of samba that was born in Brazil around 1958. It was created by composer and pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim (1927-94) and singer and guitarist João Gilberto (1931- ). In contrast to the wildness and enthusiasm of previous samba styles, this style had an intellectual, calm sensibility and new harmonies influenced by West Coast jazz. Early representative songs included "Desafinado" and "One Note Samba" (both written by Jobim). After "Garôta de Ipanema" (also written by Jobim) became a hit in the United States in 1963, bossa nova became commercialized and spread around the world as a soft-touch mood jazz. *Some of the terminology that mentions "Gilberto, J." is listed below.
