A former town in Kamitsuga County in the southwest of Tochigi Prefecture. It was incorporated as a town in 1994. The eastern part is the alluvial plain of the Omoigawa River, and greenhouse horticulture is carried out mainly on rice and wheat, as well as strawberries and Chinese chives. Kanai's Yakushido Hall contains an iron seated statue of Yakushi Nyorai, an important cultural property. Incorporated into Tochigi City in October 2011. 32.00 km2 . 6,524 people (2010).
