He Yan

Japanese:
He Yan

A politician from the Wei dynasty during the Three Kingdoms period in China. His courtesy name was Pingshu. He was from Wan (Nanyang County, Henan Province). He was the grandson of the Han general He Jin (?-189). His mother, Yin, later became the wife of Emperor Wu of Wei, Cao Cao, so he grew up in the palace with his mother from an early age and was highly praised for his intelligence, but he also had an arrogant side, such as imitating the prince's clothes. Emperor Wu loved him and allowed him to marry the emperor's daughter, Princess Jinxiang. However, his disrespectful attitude made Emperor Wen (Cao Pi) dislike him and he was not given an official position. Emperor Ming also disliked him and only gave him a mediocre official position, so he was not blessed with an official position. When Cao Shuang (?-249) competed for power with Sima Yi, he was promoted to the position of Minister through Cao Shuang's influence and was in charge of appointing officials, but it is said that he promoted many of his acquaintances. In addition to compiling the "Interpretations of the Analects," he wrote dozens of works, including "On Morality," "On the Unknown," "On the Inaction of Oneself," and "Filled Poems." His philosophy respected the "Tales of Laozi," and he became one of the founders of the Xuanxue school of thought alongside Wang Bi. There is a famous anecdote about his argument with Wang Bi, in which he argued that sages lack the emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness.
