United Province of Canada - Province of Canada

United Province of Canada - Province of Canada
A British colony established in Canada on February 10, 1841, by the Act of Union the previous year. The former Upper Canada and Lower Canada were united to become one colony, and the two administrative districts of Canada West (formerly Upper Canada) and Canada East (formerly Lower Canada) were elected to the Parliament in equal numbers. This was based on the Durham Report, and the British government's intention was to unify the two Canadas, so that the French Canadians would be overwhelmed and absorbed by the English Canadians, but the political development in Canada at the time was not such that such an intention could be realized. Seeing this situation, Governor Elgin (Earl) asked R. Baldwin and L. Lafontaine to form a cabinet in 1848, and the United Provinces of Canada obtained a responsible government. In the 1850s, the Canadian colony was able to make a great economic development due to the conclusion of the Treaty of Reciprocity with the United States in 1854, the abolition of the clergy reservations in Canada West, and the abolition of the manor system in Canada East. On July 1, 1867, the United Colony of Canada was dissolved with the establishment of the Dominion of Canada, and the two provinces of Quebec and Ontario were created.
