Masato Kitabatake

Masato Kitabatake
1449-1508 A military commander from the Muromachi to Sengoku period.
Born in the first year of the Hōtoku era. Son of Kitabatake Noritomo. Governor of Ise. Also served as the guardian of northern Ise in Bunmei 3. During the Onin-Bunmei War, he responded flexibly, attacking the Ouchi clan of the Western Army in Bunmei 4, and supporting Hatakeyama Yoshinari of the Western Army in 1878 due to conflict with the Isshiki clan, minimizing military deployment while striving to maintain and strengthen his territory. He was good at renga (linked verse), and included 35 verses in the "Kitabatake Family Rengaawase" (linked verse contest). Died on October 2, Eishō 5. Age 60. His original name was Masatomo.

宝徳元年生まれ。北畠教具(のりとも)の子。伊勢(いせ)国司。文明3年北伊勢守護をかねる。応仁・文明の乱にあたり,文明4年西軍の大内氏を攻め,11年一色氏との対立から西軍の畠山義就(よしなり)に加勢するなど流動的に対応,出兵は最小限にとどめて領国の維持・強化をはかった。連歌をよくし,「北畠家連歌合(れんがあわせ)」に35句はいっている。永正(えいしょう)5年10月2日死去。60歳。初名は政具(まさとも)。
