Yamatsuriyama

A mountain located in Yamatsuri Town, Higashi Shirakawa County, southeastern Fukushima Prefecture. It is 402 meters above sea level. It is one of the peaks in the Yamizo Mountains near the border with Ibaraki Prefecture, and part of the mountain, made of granite, has been deeply carved by the Kuji River, forming a gorge with a series of oddly shaped rocks. It is also a famous spot for cherry blossoms and azaleas, and is the center of Okukuji Prefectural Natural Park. The name Yamatsuri is said to come from the fact that Hachiman Taro Yoshiie enshrined an arrow here on his way back from an expedition to the east. A Japanese mathematics plaque by Yoshida Sakushiro, a Japanese mathematics scholar from the area, has been dedicated to Yamatsuri Shrine.

福島県南東部、東白川(ひがししらかわ)郡矢祭町にある山。標高402メートル。茨城県との県境近くの八溝山地(やみぞさんち)の一峰で、花崗(かこう)岩からなる山体の一部は久慈(くじ)川に深く刻まれ、奇岩の連なる峡谷となっている。サクラやツツジの名所でもあり、奥久慈県立自然公園の中心。矢祭の名は、八幡(はちまん)太郎義家(よしいえ)が東征の帰途、矢をこの地に祀(まつ)ったことに由来するという。矢祭神社には当地出身の和算家吉田作四郎の和算算額が奉納されている。
