Born 19 March 1883 in Chorley, Lancashire [Died] March 19, 1950, Birmingham British organic chemist. Received his doctorate from the University of Göttingen in 1910. Lecturer at the University of St. Andrews (1912), professor at Durham University (20), professor at the University of Birmingham (25), and vice-chancellor of both universities (47). Together with JC Irvine and T. Purdy, he studied carbohydrates such as sugar, starch, and cellulose, and discovered that the carbon atoms in sugar are arranged in a ring rather than a straight line. In 1943, together with E. L. Hurst, he determined the molecular structure of vitamin C and was the first to successfully synthesize it. This was an important achievement not only in organic chemistry, but also in medicine, as it made it possible to produce vitamin C cheaply. In 1937, he shared the Nobel Prize in Chemistry with P. Culler, and was knighted in 1947. Howarth |
