Born: October 21, 1912, Budapest, Hungary [Died] September 5, 1997. Antibes, France. British conductor and pianist. Real name György Stern Solti. One of the most highly regarded conductors in the world in the second half of the 20th century. He was especially known for his performances of Romantic orchestral music and opera. He studied under Béla Bartók and Zoltan Kodály at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. At the age of 18, he joined the teaching staff of the Budapest Opera House, and made his debut as a conductor there in 1938. Because he was Jewish, he fled to Zurich, Switzerland, for safety when World War II broke out. As a foreigner, he was unable to obtain a conducting position, but in 1942 he won the piano category at the Geneva International Competition. After the war, he served as music director of the Bavarian State Opera from 1946 to 1952, the Frankfurt Opera House from 1952 to 1960, and the Covent Garden Opera House from 1961 to 1971. He was knighted in 1971 and became a British citizen in 1972. He served as music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 1969 to 1991, reviving the orchestra's international reputation. He also served as principal conductor of the Orchestre de Paris from 1972 to 1975, music consultant to the Opéra National de Paris from 1971 to 1973, and principal conductor and artistic director of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 1983. As a conductor, he was known for his dynamic and profound interpretations, and left behind many renowned performances of large-scale works, including operas and symphonies by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Richard Wagner, Richard Georg Strauss, and Gustav Mahler.
