Volga-Don Canal - Volga-Don Canal

Japanese: ボルガ･ドン運河 - ボルガドンうんが（英語表記）Volgo‐Donskoi sudokhodnyi kanal

This canal, which connects the Volga and Don rivers in southwestern Russia, was completed in 1952. It is 101 km long, 45 km of which passes through the river and reservoir, and the rest is excavated as a cut. The canal was built at the point where the midstream Don flows from northwest to southeast before turning southwest and flowing away, i.e., the point where it is closest to the Volga. The difference in water levels between the two rivers is about 40 m, and the Karachi Hills rise between the two rivers, so locks and an artificial lake like those in the Panama Canal had to be constructed, and a large amount of water had to be pumped up from the Don side (west) to the reservoir on the watershed.

ロシア連邦南西部，ボルガ川とドン川の間を結ぶ運河で1952年完成。長さ101km。うち45kmは川と貯水池を通り，残りは掘割として掘削したものである。ドン川の中流部が北西から南東に流下し，南西に反転して流れ去る地点，すなわち最もボルガ川に接近した地点に運河がつくられたものである。両河川の水位差は約40mあり，そのうえ両河川間にカラチ丘陵が高まるので，パナマ運河のような閘門（こうもん）と人造湖を構築し，しかも分水界の貯水池へはドン川側(西側)から大量の水をポンプで押し上げなければならない。
