Tokugawa Jikki

Japanese:
Tokugawa Jikki

This is a record of the Tokugawa Shogunate from the first Shogun Ieyasu to the tenth Shogun Ieharu. The main part is a chronological record of the political achievements of each Shogun, and the appendix is a collection of their wise words and good deeds. The real name is "Go-Jikki" and "Tokugawa-Jikki" is the common name. Apart from "Toshogu (Ieyasu) Go-Jikki," each Shogun is given a posthumous name, and the titles include "Taitokuin-den (the second Shogun Hidetada) Go-Jikki." Written by Narushima Motonao under the direction of Daigaku no Kami Hayashi Taira (Shosai), the draft was prepared in 1809 (Bunka 6), the original was completed in 1843 (Tenpo 14), and the copy in 1849 (Kaei 2). The total number of volumes is 516, including 447 main volumes, 68 appendices, and one volume of completed works, a general catalogue, and a bibliography of citations. In Japan, it was modeled after the Montoku Annals and the Sandai Annals, and in China, the Tang Dynasty's Shunzong Annals and the Ming and Qing Dynasties' Annals. It is written in a fluent, mixed-katakana style and is accurate in its descriptions, but it has a flaw in that it praises the achievements of the shoguns too much. Its sequel, the Tokugawa Jikki Continued, covers the period from the 11th shogun, Ienari, to the 15th shogun, Yoshinobu. However, only the two shoguns, Ienari and Ieyoshi, are compiled, while the other three shoguns merely have historical materials arranged and accompanying documents added. The editing is the same as the main volume. Editing continued until 1870 (Meiji 3). It is included in the New Revised and Enlarged National History Series (Sho 38-47, Zoku 48-52), edited by Kuroita Katsumi.
