He served as professor of Roman law, civil law and legal philosophy at Goethe University (1948) and rector of the university (1956-57), and later director of the Institute for Roman Law and Reception History and the Max Planck Institute for Comparative European Legal History. He has made a wide range of achievements, but is particularly notable in the field of legal philosophy. He criticized legal positivism and developed a theory of natural law that holds that positive law is restricted by the ethical values behind it and the nature of things. His major works are "Grundzüge der Rechtsphilosophie" (1950) and "Naturrecht als wissenschaftliches Problem" (1965).
