Rock bag - Rock bag

Japanese:
Rock bag - Rock bag

A perennial plant of the Scrophulariaceae family (APG classification: Plantaginaceae). The leaves are fleshy, ovate-oblong, and bluntly sawtoothed. In summer, several large flowers bloom at the top of the stem. The flowers are pale red-purple, pouch-shaped, and covered with long hairs. They have four stamens and one pseudo-stamen that crosses the inside of the flower tube diagonally. They grow on rocky ground in high mountains, and are found in northern Honshu, Hokkaido, the Kuril Islands, and northern Siberia. They are named after the pouch-shaped flowers that grow on rocky ground. They are also called Tarumaesou, as they are common on Mt. Tarumae in Hokkaido. There are about 250 species of this genus known in North America, but only one species in Asia. Several species, including the North American willow willow, are cultivated.

[Yamazaki Takashi August 20, 2021]

As a result of morphological differences and molecular phylogenetic analysis, the North American species was separated into a separate genus, Penstemon, which became the former North American genus Penstemon .
