?-1622 The leader of the White Lotus Rebellion that occurred in the late Ming Dynasty in China. A native of Jueye, Shandong Province. From around the mid-16th century, the White Lotus Rebellion became active despite the dynasty's suppression. At the time, politics were in turmoil due to party strife and the rampant eunuchs, and taxes were constantly increasing due to the war with the Manchus. In 1622 (Tianqi 2), Xu Hongru, calling himself the "Emperor of the Restoration of Fuliety," led the sect in a rebellion together with Wang Haoxian and others. They attacked various parts of Shandong, mainly in Jueye and Yuncheng, but were defeated by government forces and crucified in Beijing. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
