Chest of drawers - Chest of drawers
A large box with a lid. The word "hitsu" comes from the Chinese word "hitsu" (box). There are Tang (Kan) bitsu (illustration) which has legs, and Japanese (Wa) bitsu (illustration) which does not have legs. Karabitsu usually have six legs, two on each long side and one on each short side, but small square bitsu generally have four legs. There are lacquered nihitsu and plain wooden akahitsu (aka box), and some lacquered bitsu are decorated with maki-e (Japanese lacquer painting). Bitsu are thought to have been in use since the Kofun period, but Karabitsu were more commonly used up until the Middle Ages.
