The coast of the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa, near present-day Liberia and Sierra Leone. European navigators who came to this coast from around the 15th and 16th centuries gave it the name Malagueta Pepper because it was actively traded here. Since pepper was called the "grain of paradise," this coast was also called the Grain Coast.
