…It was not until the mid-19th century that the city began to undergo new growth. The coal and steel industries developed rapidly with the establishment of an iron foundry and a steam machine factory (1832) by the entrepreneur Friedrich Harkort (1793-1880), coal shaft mining (1840), and the opening of a railway line (1847). Two-thirds of the city was destroyed in World War II, but today the city has a variety of industrial sectors, including steel, machinery, electrical equipment, building materials, chemicals, and food. …
