A Japanese term for a vehicle equipped with camping facilities. There are many types, including mobile homes, which are large buses with the interiors modified to resemble homes, house trailers equipped with home-like facilities, and campers equipped with simple accommodation facilities inside small and medium-sized commercial vehicles (light vans). Some campers based on small and medium-sized light vans have roofs that can be extended high at the destination to avoid the cramped interior, and some have tents that can be pulled out from the sides of the vehicle to expand the room. There are also some with removable accommodation rooms installed in the cargo beds of small and medium-sized trucks and multipurpose four-wheel drive jeeps. Although the home of so-called auto camping using automobiles is the United States, it is becoming popular in Japan as well with the advent of the leisure era.
