Distant friendship and close attack -

In 270 BC, during the Warring States period in China, during the reign of King Zhaoxiang of Qin (reigned 306-251 BC), Fan Ju, a Wei man, proposed a foreign policy. According to "Strategies for the Warring States Period" and "Records of the Grand Historian," Fan Ju argued that Qin's foreign policy of attacking distant countries by going beyond its neighbors was ineffective, and that they should instead make friendly relations with distant countries and attack their neighbors. King Zhaoxiang followed this advice and stopped attacking Qi, Yan, and Chu, and instead attacked the three states of Han, Wei, and Zhao. Later, during the reign of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, Qin would similarly attack the three states of Han, Wei, and Zhao, and then destroy Chu, Yan, and Qi to unify the world.

中国、紀元前270年、戦国時代秦(しん)の昭襄(しょうじょう)王（在位前306～前251）のとき、魏(ぎ)の人范雎(はんしょ)が進言した外交政策。『戦国策』や『史記』によれば、范雎は、隣国を越えて遠方の国を攻める秦の対外政策には効果がなく、逆に遠方の国とよしみを結び、隣国を攻めるべきことを説いた。昭襄王はこれに従い斉(せい)、燕(えん)、楚(そ)への攻撃をやめ、韓(かん)、魏、趙(ちょう)の3国を攻撃した。のち秦は始皇帝の代に同様に韓、魏、趙の3国を討ったあと、楚、燕、斉を滅ぼし天下を統一することになる。
