Located in the southwest of Shizuoka Prefecture, at the mouth of the Tenryu River, and formerly the town area in the southwest of Iwata City. In 1955, it merged with two villages and was renamed Ryuyo Town. In 2005, it merged with four other cities, towns, and villages to form Iwata City. During the Edo period, it flourished as a collection port for Tenryu lumber, tea, and textiles, but after the Meiji period, it lost this role with the opening of the Tokaido Main Line. In recent years, with the completion of the Kaketsuka Bridge, factories related to automobile parts, musical instruments, and textiles have moved in from nearby Hamamatsu City and elsewhere. Melons are a specialty of the area, and it is also known as a center for greenhouse vegetable cultivation. Eels are farmed and sweetfish juveniles are raised at the mouth of the Tenryu River.
