Painting began with documentary paintings of the New World. A representative of this period was the watercolorist Conrad Martens (1801-78), who traveled with Darwin on the HMS Beagle. Among the painters of the period when Pre-Raphaelites and Impressionism were influencing the movement was Louis Buvelot (1814-88).
