He was placed on the Western Roman throne by Marcian's successor Emperor Leo I, but was approved by the Western Roman powerhouse F. Ricimer on the condition that he marry his daughter Alypia. After ascending to the throne, he was accused of reviving paganism because he was a Greek philosopher, and after the failure of the Vandal campaign, he came into conflict with Ricimer, was defeated, and was killed.
