A person who engages in political activities. Politicians are often divided into politicians and statesmen. Italian political scientist G. Mosca distinguishes between the former as "a person who has the necessary abilities to reach the highest position in the governing system and knows how to maintain it," and the latter as "a person whose breadth of knowledge and depth of insight enable him to sense clearly and accurately the needs of the society in which he lives and who knows how to discover the best means to lead that society to the goals it must achieve with as little shock and pain as possible." M. Weber sought three qualities for a politician: responsibility, passion, and insight.
