Heisuke Sugiyama

Critic. Born in Osaka City. Dropped out of Keio University's Department of Finance. From the end of 1931 (Showa 6), he appeared under the name Hikawa Retsu in the anonymous review column "Mame Senkan" of the Tokyo Asahi Shimbun, where he gained a reputation for his harsh critiques of politics, society, and customs, and his liberal ideas and frank critical attitude were well received in journalism. However, as the wartime regime progressed, he took a nationalistic stance, and eventually disappeared from the mass media. His books include "Slashing the Spring Breeze" (1933), "Fifty Years of Literature" (1942), and many others.

評論家。大阪市生まれ。慶応義塾大学理財科中退。1931年（昭和6）末ごろから『東京朝日新聞』の匿名批評欄「豆戦艦」に氷川烈(ひかわれつ)の名で登場し、政治、社会、風俗にわたる辛辣(しんらつ)な批評ぶりが評判となり、自由主義的な発想と率直な批評態度がジャーナリズムに好評を得た。しかし、戦時体制の進行とともに国家主義的な論陣を張り、やがてマスコミから消えていった。著書に『春風を斬(き)る』（1933）、『文芸五十年史』（1942）ほか多数がある。
