Yokoyama Matajiro - Yokoyama Matajiro

Paleontologist and geologist. He laid the foundations of paleontology in Japan. Born in Nagasaki in 1878 (Man'en 1). In 1878 (Meiji 11), he graduated from the first class of the University of Tokyo Preparatory School (later the First High School), and in 1882, he graduated from the Department of Geology at the University of Tokyo with a graduation thesis on a survey of the southwestern Kii Peninsula. He immediately joined the Geological Survey of Japan, and assisted Naumann in laying the foundations for the geological survey business. From 1886 to 1889, he studied paleontology at the University of Munich in Germany. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at the Faculty of Science of the Imperial University of Tokyo, lecturing on paleontology. He first studied animal and plant fossils from the Cretaceous and Jurassic periods, but later studied and comprehensively described shell fossils from the Tertiary Period in Japan, leaving a great academic legacy. He worked to introduce geology to Japan through works such as "Pre-World History." He also participated in the survey work in the early stages when construction of the Tanna Tunnel began (1918).

古生物学者、地質学者。日本の古生物学の基礎を築く。万延(まんえん)元年長崎に生まれる。1878年（明治11）東京大学予備門（後の第一高等学校）を第1回生として卒業、1882年、紀伊半島南西部の調査研究を卒業論文として東京大学地質学科を卒業した。ただちに地質調査所に入り、ナウマンを助けて地質調査事業の基礎をつくった。1886～1889年ドイツのミュンヘン大学に留学し、古生物学を学ぶ。帰国して帝国大学理科大学教授となり、古生物学を講義した。初め、白亜紀、ジュラ紀の動物化石、植物化石の研究を行ったが、のちに日本の第三紀の貝化石について研究し網羅的記載を行って、学問的に大きな遺産を残した。『前世界史』などの著述によって地質学の日本への導入に努めた。丹那(たんな)トンネルの工事開始（1918）の初期には、調査にも参画している。
