…A monk of Cluny, he became a cardinal around 1080, and played an active role in church reform and the Investiture Controversy as a papal legate under Pope Gregory VII. He became pope in 1088, but was unable to enter Rome until 1093 because of the antipope Clement III, who was supported by Emperor Henry IV. He held three synods (1095 at Piacenza and Clermont, and 1098 at Bari) to reform the church, and at the Synod of Clermont he also proclaimed the first Crusade. …
