Also known as candlelight. A unit of luminous intensity. Used until the International Committee for Weights and Measures adopted the candela in 1948. (1) International candle. A unit established in 1908 by an agreement between the national laboratories of the UK, the US and France, and maintained for incandescent lamps thereafter. Equivalent to 1.0067 candela. (2) Candle. One candle is one-tenth of the horizontal luminous intensity of a Harcourt 10-candle pentane lamp burning under certain conditions. Used in the UK and Japan. Equivalent to 1.0 international candle. (3) Höfner candle. The horizontal luminous intensity of a Höfner lamp burning under certain conditions is 1 Höfner candle. Used in Germany.
