…The tea boxes favored by early modern tea masters are a good example. They were made to hold relatively small tea utensils and were easy to carry, and were tailored to reflect tastes. Storage boxes for tea utensils and scrolls were also invented. Religious boxes were also extremely diverse, including sutra boxes for holding scriptures, precept boxes for holding the samadhi precepts during esoteric Buddhist ablutions, set boxes for holding the agenda of a Buddhist ceremony or sermons and placed on a side table, setso boxes, rosary boxes, jewel boxes, kesa boxes, and san'e boxes. Many of these boxes are aesthetically pleasing and are masterpieces that were made using the finest art and craft techniques of the time. …
