Born: February 23, 1927 in Altus, Oklahoma [Died] July 30, 2013. Sociologist of religion in Oakland, California. He proposed an innovative approach to reconcile traditional religious societies with social change. He studied anthropology at Harvard University, and received his PhD in sociology and East Asian languages in 1955. He conducted research at the Institute for Islamic Studies at McGill University in Canada and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at Harvard University. He studied in Japan from 1960 to 1961 on a Fulbright scholarship. He returned to Harvard in 1961 and served as Ford Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley from 1967 to 1997. He was named the Elliott Professor of Sociology Emeritus at the University of California in 1997. His publications include Beyond Belief: Essays on Religion in a Post-Traditional World (1970), Varieties of Civil Religion (1980, co-author), Habits of the Heart (1985, co-author), and Religion in Human Evolution: From the Paleolithic to the Axial Age (2011).
