Sandankyo

Japanese: 三段峡 - さんだんきょう
Sandankyo

The gorge of the Shiwaki River is located in Akiota Town, Yamagata County, northwest of Hiroshima Prefecture. The Shiwaki River, a tributary of the Ota River that flows out of the Yawata Plateau in the backbone of the Chugoku Mountains, and its tributary, the Yokogo River, carve a deep gorge that stretches for about 16 kilometers. There are a series of waterfalls and deep abysses, such as Sandan Falls, Nidan Falls, Ryumon, Sarutobi, and Kurobuchi, and the rock walls reach a height of 100 meters. It has been designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty by the national government, and is surrounded by virgin forest, making it part of the West Chugoku Mountains Quasi-National Park. Upstream of the gorge are the Tarutoko Dam and the artificial lake Hijiri Lake. There is a direct bus from Hiroshima City. Sandankyo Station on the JR Kabe Line was also available, but the Kabe-Sandankyo section of the line was discontinued in 2003.
