Sandan no mai - Sandan no mai

Japanese:
Sandan no mai - Sandan no mai
The name of a dance in Noh and Kyogen. In Noh, it is a type of Chu-no-mai, and the musical form of Chu-no-mai is simplified from the formal five-dan to a three-dan, but when the dancer is a tsure or a child actor, the formal form is three-dan, so it is specifically called Sandan-no-mai. It is performed in plays such as "Takeshima," "Arashiyama," "Tsurukame," "Shozon," and "Sekidera Komachi." Like Chu-no-mai, there are Taiko Sandan-no-mai and Daisho Sandan-no-mai. In Kyogen, it is a simplified dance that imitates Noh's Sandan-no-mai. Like Chu-no-mai, it is a Ryuchukan style of music, but the overall performance is light, the flute melody has a sense of elegance, and the percussion instruments (kotsuzumi, otsuzumi, taiko) are limited to a simple hand arrangement of the Mitsuji style.
