…It was composed between 1819 and 1823, in parallel with the large-scale works Mass Solemn and Symphony No. 9. This work was composed as part of a project by music publisher Anton Diabelli (1781-1858) in which famous composers living in Austria were invited to write variations on a single theme, and it was dedicated to his lover Antonie Brentano. A collection of variations by 50 composers was also published in one volume in the same year, 1823, except for Beethoven's work, which was published separately. …
