Showa [Village] - Showa

Japanese: 昭和[村] - しょうわ
Showa [Village] - Showa
A village in Onuma County, western Fukushima Prefecture. Population 2,025 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Nojiri River, a tributary of the Tadami River, the village is surrounded by mountains over 1,000 meters above sea level, including Mt. Hakase (1,482m). In addition to rice, tobacco leaf and konjac root were cultivated after World War II, but after a change in varieties in 1988, floriculture has increased. Ramie has been cultivated since early modern times, mainly in the Oashi area, and was sent as a raw material for Echigo Jofu cloth. In 1975, the development of the textile industry began, and it was expected that this would become a new local industry to halt depopulation, but the population continues to decline.

Showa [Village]

A village in Tone County, central Gunma Prefecture. Population 7,962 (1995). Occupying the northwest foot of Mount Akagi, the Katashina River flows on the northwestern border and the Tone River flows on the western border, bordering Numata City. Old settlements are in the lowlands along the rivers, and settlements developed after World War II are distributed on the slopes at the foot of Mount Akagi, at an altitude of 600 to 800 meters. With the completion of a field irrigation project in 1967, the foothills have shifted from cultivation of miscellaneous grains and wheat to cultivation of vegetables such as cabbage and radishes, transforming the area into one of the prefecture's leading vegetable producing areas. Konnyaku is also a major producer of the plant.
