A type of bamboo in the grass family. Also known as Gosanchiku. It is usually cultivated, although it grows wild in Kyushu. The underground stems grow horizontally, and the culms are 5-10 m tall and 2-7 cm in diameter. It is similar to Madake (Madake) but is smaller, and the lower part of the culm has narrow internodes and malformed swelling. Two branches grow from each node, which further branch out. The leaves are lanceolate with pointed tips and rounded bases, 10 cm long and 1 cm wide. Thin, cylindrical flower spikes grow from the twigs. The flowers have three scales, three stamens, and three styles. The bamboo shoots are edible, and the skin is hairless and has dark spots. The wood is prized for fishing rods. The Japanese name is said to come from the likeness of the short internodes, which are swollen, to the belly of Hotei.
