Pig iron for casting

Pig iron used to make cast products. Due to its uses, it has a high silicon content and low manganese and sulfur content. It is classified by the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) into three types: type 1 (for ordinary use), type 2 (for malleable cast iron), and type 3 (for tough cast iron). Ordinary pig iron is also called gray pig iron because most of the carbon contained within it becomes graphite and its cross section is gray. It has good castability and is widely used for general casting, but it has the disadvantage of being brittle because it contains graphite flakes. Pig iron for malleable cast iron and pig iron for tough cast iron are made to have strong properties while retaining their castability.

鋳物製品をつくるのに用いられる銑鉄。用途上，ケイ素が多く，マンガン，硫黄が少い。日本工業規格 JISの分類で1種 (普通用) ，2種 (可鍛鋳鉄用) ，3種 (強靭鋳鉄用) に分けられる。普通用銑鉄は，内包する大部分の炭素が黒鉛となり，断面が鼠色なので，鼠銑ともいう。鋳造性はよく，一般の鋳物用として広く用いられるが，黒鉛の片を含むのでもろいという欠点をもつ。可鍛鋳鉄用銑鉄，強靭鋳鉄用銑鉄は鋳造性を残しながら，強靭な性質を与えたものである。
