Mikuni Minato - Mikuni Minato

Japanese: 三国湊 - みくにみなと

A port at the mouth of the Kuzuryu River in Sakai County, Echizen Province (Fukui Prefecture). It is located on the right bank of the Kuzuryu River where the Takeda River joins.
[Ancient and Middle Ages]
It is believed to have functioned as a naval base for the Yamato Imperial Court in the past. There were also exchanges with the continent through the Sea of Japan, and in 778 (Hōki 9), Komadonotsugu, who had sent off the Bohai envoys who had arrived in Japan two years earlier, returned to Mikuniminato together with the Bohai envoys. In ancient Echizen, many Todaiji temple estates were established, and the harvest was sent down the Kuzuryu River from Mikuniminato to Tsuruganotsu by sea, where it was unloaded, so Mikuniminato also played a major economic role.

［古代･中世］
　古くは大和朝廷の水軍の基地として機能したと見られる。また日本海を通して大陸との交渉も見られ，778年(宝亀9)には2年前に来日した渤海（ぼつかい）使を送り届けた高麗殿嗣が渤海の送使とともに三国湊に帰着した。古代越前には多数の東大寺領荘園が営まれたが，その収穫は九頭竜川を下り三国湊から海路敦賀津（つるがのつ）に送られ，そこで陸揚げされたように，三国湊は経済的にも大きな役割を果たした。
