A Proto-Malay ethnic group living mainly in Mountain Province in the northern mountainous region of Luzon in the Philippines. The population of Mountain Province (capital Bontoc) was 94,096 (1975), of which 32,800 (34.9%) spoke Bontoc as their native language. The Bontoc people are thought to share the so-called megalithic cultural complex of Southeast Asia with the Naga peoples of northeastern India and the people of Nias Island in eastern Indonesia, due to their cultural characteristics such as headhunting, merit festivals, doll-growing, animal sacrifice, construction of megalithic monuments, and skull worship.
