...In particular, in the 19th century, Russia aimed to invade the three khanates of Bukhara, Khiva, and Khokand in Western Turkestan. This was something that Britain, which had a colony in India, feared most, and it sent many explorers to this region to investigate the situation. The explorers of William Moorcroft (1765?-1825), Alexander Burnes (1805-41), and Charles Stoddart (1806-42) are good examples of this, and many explorers of this period met tragic ends in conflicts with the local people. Secondly, this region was a treasure trove of archaeological material.
