287 BCE - 246 BCE King of Syria. Reigned 261-246 BC. Second son of Antiochus I and his wife Stratonice. He allied with Antigonus II of Macedonia in the Second Syrian War against Ptolemy II of Egypt (260-253 BC) and recovered the coastal areas of Asia Minor and parts of southern Syria (Cole-Syria) that his father had lost. In 253 BC, he divorced his wife Laodice, and married Ptolemy II's daughter Berenice the following year. However, he named his wife's son Seleucus II as his successor just before his death. This led to a dispute over the succession to the throne and led to an invasion by Ptolemy III (246-241 BC), who supported Berenice and her son.
