Gibachi - Gibachi

Japanese: ギバチ - ぎばち

A freshwater fish of the family Lentiginidae (illustration) in the order Siluriformes. Local names include Gigyu, Gigyo (Gunma Prefecture), Gebachigingyō (Iwate Prefecture), and Gegyu (Oyodo River, Miyazaki Prefecture). Most of these names, like Gigi, are thought to be derived from the pronunciation of the spines on its pectoral fins. Gibachi and Gebachi mean wasps that make the "gi" and "ge" sounds, probably because their stings are painful. It is distributed discontinuously between eastern Japan and Kyushu, but recent research has revealed slight differences in morphology between eastern Japan and Kyushu. Total length 10-25cm.

ナマズ目ギギ科の淡水魚（イラスト）。ギギュウ，ギギョウ(群馬県)，ゲバチギンギョ(岩手県)，ゲギュ(宮崎県大淀川)などの地方名がある。その大部分はギギの場合と同様に胸びれのとげによる発音に由来すると思われる。ギバチとゲバチはギ，ゲという音を出すハチの意で，刺されると痛むためであろう。東日本と九州とに不連続に分布するが，最近の研究によれば東日本産と九州産とではわずかながら形態などに差異が認められる。全長10～25cm。
