Deer mouse

Japanese: シカネズミ（英語表記）deer mouse

A general term for a mammal of the order Rodentia, family Muridae, subfamily Hesperomyinae, that resembles the Japanese field mouse in appearance. It is found from Alaska to most of North America, and some species even as far as Colombia in South America. It has a body length of 7-17 cm, tail length of 4-20.5 cm, and weighs about 15 g. Approximately 60 species are known, including the long-tailed deer mouse ( Peromyscus maniculatus ), and those that live in forests tend to be dark brown to reddish brown, while those that live on plains and in the desert tend to be sandy colored.

外形がアカネズミに似た齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科アメリカネズミ亜科Hesperomyinaeの哺乳類の総称。アラスカから北アメリカの大部分，種によっては南アメリカのコロンビアまで分布。体長7～17cm，尾長4～20.5cm，体重約15g。オナガシカネズミ(シカシロアシマウス)Peromyscus maniculatusなどおよそ60種が知られ，森林生のものは暗褐色～赤褐色，平原，砂漠にすむものは砂色の傾向がある。
