…After studying at Harvard University for two years, he taught English and American literature at his alma mater Emporia College, the University of Oklahoma, and the University of Washington, but he had no contact with the East during his long teaching career. As a true Midwesterner, he maintained a populist stance, and his major work, “A History of the Main Trends in American Thought” (3 volumes, 1927-30), aims to reexamine from a liberal and Jeffersonian perspective the fundamental concepts that have come to be considered American. The first two volumes of this large work won the Pulitzer Prize (the third volume is unfinished), and its bold methods and conclusions had a great influence on intellectuals in the 1930s, establishing a paradigm for understanding American culture.
