Cannes (English spelling)
Cannes is an international tourist city located on the Mediterranean coast in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence region in southeastern France. It is located in the eastern part of the Cote d'Azur, and is a world-famous resort for summer and winter getaways, along with Nice. In particular, the International Film Festival, founded in 1946, is a global event. When British politician H. Broome tried to go to Nice, he was unable to do so due to a cholera epidemic, and instead stayed in Cannes (1834), which was a poor fishing village at the time. He liked it so much that he built a villa there, which is said to have been the catalyst for the city's prosperity. The Croisette, a promenade along the seaside decorated with palm trees and flower beds, is famous, and there are luxurious hotels, casinos, and a yacht harbor in the surrounding area. Floriculture is popular in the hinterland, and a flower market is held every morning along the scenic tree-lined avenue along the harbor. The mimosa flower market in particular is internationally famous. The old town is located on a hill on the west side of the port, and at the top of the hill is the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-L'Esperance (16th-17th century). Population: 69,363 (1990).
