〘名〙① 北方の山。※万葉（８Ｃ後）二・一六一「向南山(きたやま)にたなびく雲の青雲の星離れゆき月を離れて」② 特に、京都北方の諸山の称。船岡山、衣笠山、岩倉山など。また、その付近の称。※古今（905‐914）秋下・二九七・詞書「きた山にもみぢをらんとてまかれりける時によめる」③ 「来た」の意を「北」にかけていうしゃれ。(イ) 気があること。※歌舞伎・稽古筆七いろは（鳩の平右衛門）（1867）「伊兵衛どのがちょこちょこ来るは、おきたどのにきた山(ヤマ)ゆゑぢゃ」(ロ) 衣服などがいたみ弱ること。また、食物の腐りかかること。※洒落本・大通契語（1800）「著物はとび色ちりめんの小袖、よほどきた山とみへ」(ハ) 腹がへること。空腹であること。※歌舞伎・水天宮利生深川（筆売幸兵衛）（1885）二幕「然も今日も茶粥腹で、おなかが余程北山(キタヤマ)だ」④ (京都の北山は、口寄せの巫女の多く出るところからのしゃれ) 接吻の異称。[語誌](1)①の挙例「万葉‐一六一」の「向南山」を、吉野山・香具山などの特定の山をさすとする説もあるが不詳。
(2)平安時代には、②のように山城国愛宕郡（現在の左京区岩倉あたり）と、葛野郡から愛宕郡にかけて（現在の北区紫野から衣笠・鷹ケ峰を含む一帯）の二箇所をさした。
