He was one of the leading actors in the Berlin theater scene in the first half of the 20th century. While appearing in early films, he also directed stage productions and wrote plays. He established his foothold as an actor under M. Reinhardt, and achieved his first great success in Kleist's "The Prince of Homburg." He went on to play many leading roles in plays such as "Faust," and continued his stage career with Gründgens after 1933 in Germany under the Nazi regime. [Ueda Koji]
